Reading the archive back
The original site reported week by week. These pieces were written later, for the archive, and read several of those reports side by side to see what they add up to.
Destination Club News covered an industry in real time. A club announced a new home in Telluride, a price rise, a partnership, a restructuring plan; the next week brought the next announcement. Read one story at a time, the archive is a stream of press releases and quick reactions. Read across it, patterns show up that nobody at the time had the distance to see.
The Ledger is where that second reading happens. Each piece starts from a question a member or a would-be member might actually have asked, such as why so many clubs wanted a house in Deer Valley, what the Caribbean villa really added to a portfolio, or what became of the houses and the memberships when a club went under. It then works through eight to twelve of the original reports, club files and reference pages to answer it.
Nothing here rewrites the archive. Prices, dates and quotes come from the original stories, and every source is linked in the sidebar so you can check the reading against the record. Where a piece brings in a later fact or a practical note about the places involved today, it says so. The pieces are dated by when they were written, not by the events they describe.
Deer Valley Was Always on the Wish List
Ski houses sold destination club memberships better than anything else. Read together, the archive shows how clubs built their mountain portfolios, why the drive from the airport mattered, and what the condos fetched when clubs failed.
The Island House: Caribbean Villas in the Club Years
Beach villas were the other half of every club brochure. What the archive says about Anguilla, Turks and Caicos and the Dominican Republic, the hurricane question, and one club that never got past its first house.
When the Club Folds, the Houses Still Have to Be Emptied
Bankrupt clubs left more than cancelled reservations. The archive on auctions, bulk asset sales and resale listings, and the Florida thread that runs through it.
